The mermaids have more pozitive apearence in Hans Cristian Andresen"s's story "The little Mermaid", contrary to the ancient belives.

The first known stories date back around 1000 BC, in Assyria, to the goddess Atargatis. She jump in the lake to became a fish, after accidantly murders the sheperd, who she loved. But the water, impressed by her beauty, turn her in fish only under her waist.
